How Much Weight to Add and When to Add It
Add weight when you can complete your target reps on every working set with technique intact. The jump should be the smallest one you can actually load, which is usually a lot smaller than lifters expect.

The short answer
Add weight when you can complete your target reps on every working set, with your normal technique and range of motion, and a rep or two still in reserve. Add the smallest amount you can actually load.
For most lifters that means 2.5 kg on a barbell lift (1.25 kg per side) and the next dumbbell up on smaller exercises, or less if you own microplates. A 5 kg jump can be reasonable on a heavier lift; judge it relative to your working weight and performance.

When to add weight
The trigger should be something you can read off your log, not something you feel on the day.
Two triggers work well, and they differ in how much evidence they require:
- Rep-range trigger. You hit the top of your rep range on every working set. This is the double progression rule, and it is the most common approach.
- Reps-over-target trigger. You exceed your rep target by one or two reps on two consecutive sessions. The 2009 ACSM position stand used this trigger and paired it with a 2% to 10% load increase (ACSM, 2009). That position stand was updated in 2026 by an overview of reviews that does not prescribe an increment (Currier et al., Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise, 2026), so treat the 2% to 10% figure as a durable heuristic rather than a current recommendation.
For the all-sets double-progression method used here, check every prescribed working set. That is our practical rule, rather than an extra condition established by the ACSM statement. If set one hits 12 and set three hits 8, you have not earned the increase yet.
One trigger that does not work: adding weight because it has been a week. The calendar has no idea what you lifted.
How much to add
Start from the smallest increment you can load, and only go bigger if that increment stops being challenging within a session or two.
As a percentage, the 2% to 10% range from the 2009 ACSM stand is a reasonable band. What that means in kilograms depends entirely on the lift:

That last row is the problem case, and it is common. On small exercises the smallest available increment is often far outside the sensible band. Lower body lifts generally tolerate larger absolute jumps than upper body lifts, and multi-joint lifts tolerate larger jumps than single-joint ones, simply because the working weights are bigger.

Why the smallest jump usually wins
A load increase costs you reps. Take a bigger jump and you lose more reps, spend more sessions climbing back to where you were, and get less total work done in the meantime.
There is also a signal problem. If you add 10 kg and the lift falls apart, you have learned that 10 kg was too much, but not whether 2.5 kg or 5 kg would have worked. Small increases keep the experiment readable.
The one argument for a larger jump is when the small one is clearly not enough: you add 2.5 kg and hit the top of your rep range again in the very next session. That is your lift telling you it had more room than you thought. Take the bigger jump and recalibrate.
When the smallest plate is still too big
This is the normal state of affairs on dumbbell and machine work, and it has four workable answers.
- Buy microplates. A pair of 0.5 kg plates allows a 1 kg total increase; a pair of 1.25 kg plates allows a 2.5 kg increase. Check what your gym already provides.
- Progress reps instead. Adding a rep at the current weight is a smaller step than any plate. Build reps until the top of your range is comfortable across all sets, then take the awkward jump from a stronger position. This is progressive overload without adding weight, and it works: an 8-week trial in 43 trained adults found rep progression and load progression produced similar adaptations (Plotkin et al., PeerJ, 2022).
- Add the weight to one set at a time. Move set one to the new dumbbell and keep the rest where they are. Next session, move set two. Each heavier set still uses a 20% larger load, but fewer sets make that jump at once.
- Add a set instead. More weekly volume is its own form of progression, and it sidesteps the increment problem entirely. See how many sets per week.
Worked example
A lifter benching 3 sets in a 6 to 10 rep range at 70 kg.

The jump from 70 kg to 72.5 kg is 3.6%, near the bottom of the ACSM band, and it needs one 1.25 kg plate per side. Reps landing at 7 to 8 after the increase is a good outcome. If they had landed at 4, the jump was too big for where that lifter actually was.
When the increase does not stick
If you add weight and the lift stays below your rep range for three or four sessions, you did not fail to be strong enough. The increment may be too large, or fatigue, recovery, or a change in technique may be affecting performance.
Go back to the previous weight, rebuild to the top of the range, and take a smaller increment. If a smaller increment is not available, hold the weight and add reps or a set instead. Repeatedly missing the target makes it harder to follow the intended training dose.

Keeping track of it
All of this depends on knowing what you did last session, set by set. If you are running it by hand, write down the weight and the reps for every working set and check them before you load the bar.

A note on safety: increasing load is not inherently risky, but a jump large enough to change how you move is a poor trade. Stop a set for sudden or severe pain, and if pain persists, worsens, or changes how you move, reduce the load or range of motion and have it assessed by a qualified healthcare professional.
